UTS students are able to study multiple languages, and have the opportunity to participate in language competitions and international exchanges, and even earn official bilingual certification.
The goal of the French program is to give students the opportunity to become functionally bilingual while developing an in-depth awareness and understanding of the francophone world. UTS offers two levels of French: Core and Special. The Core French program is a challenging, enriched program, taught almost entirely in French. The Special French program is tailored to the needs of students who have had a lengthier exposure to French and who already have greater fluency in the language. Placement in the Special French program is determined by the Languages Department.
The German program provides students with opportunities to develop thinking, analytical and communication skills in everyday and literary German.
The Latin program offers students the opportunity to study the influential language and culture of the Romans through oral and written exercises. This enables students to develop their knowledge about the Roman world and Classical tradition.
The Spanish program, which starts in Grade 9, provides students with opportunities to develop thinking, analytical and communication skills. Students research, discuss and analyze socio-economic and political issues affecting all Spanish speaking countries, read about authentic current issues, and explore several genres of literature. Although The program is not an AP stream program, interested students are supported in preparation for external exams such as the AP Spanish (Language & Culture) and DELE exams.
UTS offers a Mandarin program outside of the regular school timetable, at an additional cost.
